During the war period, in 1965, I was (as Lt Cdr (08 Sep 63), the Senior Instructor and in charge of the establishment’s electronic (wireless, radar, sonar, weapon control) systems.

Within a short period of 10 days, we had to make operational all the equipment, which were in various stages of dismantlement, for continuing training purposes.

During thee war, Valsura gave invaluable early warning to the Air Force Station and to the town of Jamnagar, besides for self protection.

Commodore BC Chatterjee was our Commanding Officer.

Does Valsura have a programme to commemorate the 1965 War, when she played a very important part of being the connective radar and communication link for the Air Force and civilian administration (from Rajkot on the East to Dwarka on the West), watching Karachi airport, coastal sea and Rann of Kutch. In addition, Valsura provided the supporting manpower to the Air Force unit in Jamnagar, for damage control and rectification.

Our son {Col BV Naresh AMC (Retd), then 8} and daughter {Dr Shirin MBBS MS FRCS, then 4} were with us in Valsura during the war. They have extensive memories of their Valsura stay, including sleeping in the trenches. Ever charming Mrs Chatterjee periodically talked to the officers’ and sailors’ ladies and children and made it really exciting and fun for them to spend the night under the sky and in the trenches.

Those few weeks were outdoor nightly picnics for all the families, from full moon, through new moon to full moon. The morale of all the Naval personnel and their families was fabulous and sky high, under the outstanding leadership of Commodore BC Chatterjee.

My children and I are eager to make the trip, to renew our fond memories of Valsura. Sadly, we will miss Dear Malathi; our children’s mother/my wife, who left us grievingly bereaved on 11 Nov 14.
